Accessibility and usability statement
We have tried to make this site accessible to everybody, regardless of what browsing device is used. If you find something that needs improvement to make the site even more accessible, please let us know.
Finding your place in the site
The main horizontal navigation bar at the top of each page shows each section of the site. The vertical navigation bar on the left hand side of the page gives the navigation options within a section. There is also a 'breadcrumb' trail below the main horizontal navigation bar that provides a hierarchy of links from the current page back to the home page.
Skipping the navigation
If you are using an audio browser and don't wish to have the navigation read out to you on any page, we have included a 'skip to content' link as one of the first entries on the page. If you select this link you will be taken straight to the page heading, and then the page content.
Returning to the homepage
When you want to return to the home page, you can click on the 'home' link on the horizontal navigation bars or on the Subject Centre logo.
Increasing the size of the page and text
If you prefer the page or font size to be larger or smaller, then press Ctrl and + or Ctrl and - in most modern browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. By default, the entire page size is increased or decreased but you can specify if you only want to increase or decrease the text size.
You can also increase and decrease text size in older browsers. Please refer to your browser's Help feature for details.
Links
Whenever possible, links are written to make sense out of context.
Technical specifications
This site uses CSS and XHTML 1.0 Transitional , although it is recognised that this is sometimes difficult to achieve in the provision of a modern, dynamic website that, for example, uses embedded media players or widgits. If a page does not validate to the above standards but is providing an enhanced user experience, this is considered to be acceptable. There are also known limitations with the Content Management System that powers the website which means pages do not always validate. We are working towards rectifying these issues.
We have made as much content as possible available via RSS, allowing the content to be imported into your feed reader of choice e.g. Google Reader.
All pages on this site features CSS [Cascading Style Sheets]. Some older browsers do not support all features in CSS and as a consequence you might experience irregularities in the design.
This site has been tested against:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, 7 and 6;
- Mozilla Firefox 3 and 2;
- Safari 4 and 3;
- Google Chrome 1.
