John Dickens is the Centre Director with overall responsibility for the strategic direction of the Engineering Subject Centre. He is also Professor of Engineering Education, Associate Dean (Teaching) for the Faculty of Engineering, and Director of the Engineering Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Loughborough University. He received a National Teaching Fellowship in 2006.

John has 25 years of teaching experience in civil and structural engineering design in the department of Civil & Building Engineering at Loughborough and in teaching administration through his previous positions as Programme Director, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department

Carol ArlettCarol Arlett, Assistant Director

Carol is the Assistant Director with responsibility for ensuring that the Centre meets its operational objectives, managing the budget, planning, reporting and evaluation. She has managed projects on employability, enterprise and employer engagement.

She has degree in Physics from Southampton University and an MSc in Management from Loughborough University. She has worked in higher education for over 16 years - prior to starting with the Engineering Subject Centre when it was first established in March 2000 she worked on a range of projects at the University of Leicester.

Since returning from maternity leave in January 2008, Kate has been working one day per week as Publications Assistant.  Her role includes copy-editing for the Centre's journal and other publications.

Kate has a BA in English Literature and since graduating in 1997 has held a range of administrative posts in both the public and private sectors.

As the Centre Administrator, Katie provides administrative support for the centre's activities as a whole and more specifically support for the centre's programme of events.

Since graduating from university in 1996, Katie has held a variety of administrative and office management positions.

emma hurdleEmma Hurdle, Project Co-ordinator

Emma's role is to co-ordinate the Mini-Projects and Special Interest Groups funded by the Centre. She also works on a range of externally funded projects.

Emma has recently been awarded with a PhD in Risk and Reliability by Loughborough University.

Glenda McMahonGlenda McMahon, Design and Events Co-ordinator

Glenda undertakes design work for the Centre's publicity materials and publications, working Monday and Tuesday.  She also provides support for the Centre Administrator, assisting with the administration of the Centre’s events programmes.

A former student and graduate of Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD), Glenda has worked both in administrative and design roles within the University and works at WEDC as a Graphic Designer the remaining days of the week.

Rob has responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Centre's web technology and e-learning initiatives.

He is a web designer with many years experience working for both commercial and academic organisations. Before becoming a web designer, Rob worked in manufacturing as an electronic engineer and later for a research organisation as an IT manager. He is a Chartered IT Practitioner.

After graduating from Nottingham Trent with an LLB, Alex worked as a practice assistant and trainee trade mark attorney for a trade mark law practice. He was there for 2 and half years handling his own portfolio of clients. In this role he provided advice for a wide range of clients principally on trade mark matters but also dealt with all other aspects of Intellectual Property. Alex then moved on a similar role for a business registration organisation, providing all trade mark and passing off advice to sole traders and SME's.

Alex is now working on the Open Educational Resources Project, providing guidance and advice on copyright for the Partner institutions. He is also involved in other administrative and functionality matters relating to the OER project.

Simon has responsibility for the Centre's programme of work with engineering departments and other academically related activities including education for sustainable development.

Simon is a Chartered Engineer and has a PhD in the area of manufacturing management and systems design. He gained both his first degree and Masters degree at Loughborough University, and subsequently worked for 10 years in the aerospace industry before moving into higher education - firstly at the then Coventry Polytechnic, and for the past 13 years at the University of Birmingham, where he continues as a Visiting Senior Lecturer.

Liz coordinates the Centre's events and professional development workshop calendar as well as our programme of support for new lecturers.  She works with other members of the team on our engineering education research activities and is an evaluator for the Teaching Award Scheme.

Liz has a degree in Industrial Design and Technology with Education and before joining the Centre in 2002 worked as a Design and Technology teacher, teaching 11-19 year olds.

Naomi DungworthNaomi Dungworth, Information Officer

Naomi has responsibility for Centre publications including the journal, newsletter, case studies and book reviews. She also looks after the resource database and catalogues learning and teaching resources for academic staff.

Naomi has an English degree, and is a chartered librarian. Prior to joining the Centre she worked as a research associate in the Department of Information Science at Loughborough University.

Naomi works part-time Monday to Wednesday.

Malcolm works for the Centre two days per week with responsibility for liaising with Sector Skills Councils, supporting the development of the new 14 - 19 Diplomas and liaising with the HE in FE engineering community.

Malcolm is a Chartered Engineer who originally qualified in Agricultural Engineering. He has taught Engineering, firstly at an FEI then latterly at an institution that taught both HE and FE and where as head of engineering he managed both HE and FE courses. He has also been involved both with helping develop and with validating Foundation Degrees in Engineering. Finally he works, for two days a week, with the New Engineering Foundation where he runs one day Masterclasses for FE lecturers in a wide range of engineering topics.

Jon Crannage is the Web Officer for the Engineering Subject Centre.

Jon graduated in the History of Art Design and Film from Sheffield Hallam University in 1993. After 10 years in the civil service working for the Driving Standards Agency and the Government Office for the East Midlands, Jon joined the Engineering Subject Centre in April 2007.
