A Crawler tractor (dozer) and 3600 track mounted excavator strip the site of vegetation and carry out a reduced level dig to formation level. The surveyor/engineer is able to judge the correct depth with the use of a wooden traveller.<br />

After excavating to formation level, the dozer and track mounted excavator stockpile the topsoil for reuse on the site boundary. Topsoil is expensive to buy and hence always reused. Temporary protection is provided where the excavation has produced a shear face.<br />

A tarpaulin is draped over newly laid brick and block work to protect it from overnight rain and frost penetration. Excessive rain penetration of brickwork may cause salts in the brick to be washed to the surface, if this occurs, the white deposit is called efflorescence.<br />
