HE in FE: Identifying and Preventing Plagiarism
A Workshop for Further Education Colleges
Monday June 1st 2009,
Margaret Street Campus, Wakefield College, WF1 2DH, West Yorkshire
This free workshop, led by Gill Rowell from PlagiarismAdvice.org, provided Higher Education practitioners working in Further Education Colleges delivering across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths curriculum, with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to identify where plagiarism in student work is likely to occur, and helped to develop appropriate strategies to prevent problems recurring and to encourage student engagement. The session included practical exercises where attendees were encouraged to share and discuss good practice in their teaching.
As a result of attending this workshop participants:
- Developed an understanding of some of the factors why plagiarism is currently viewed as an issue in education.
- Discussed some of the strategies available to tutors to discourage student plagiarism.
- Considered approaches to assessment which can minimise opportunities for plagiarism and encourage original work.
- Considered how plagiarism detection software, such as TurnitinUK can assist with both detecting student plagiarism and also as part of a more formative approach.
