2008 Award presented at the Institute of Directors on 7th January 2009

The latest award and cheque for £500 was presented at the New Engineering Foundation’s Seminar and Award Ceremony at the Institute of Directors, London on January 7th 2009 to Wakefield College's Tony Hartley.

2008 Teaching Award Winner Tony Hartley

Tony was nominated for his use of innovative methods of engaging learners using visual aids and interactive multimedia, and his contributions to developing and supporting Information and Learning Technology (ILT) within Wakefield College.

Tony, pictured here with the LSC's John Chudley and Freda Tallantyre of the Higher Education Academy, has been teaching for approximately ten years on a range of Business IT and Computing courses, at all levels up to, and including, BSc degree courses delivered on behalf of a partner university. He has designed and delivered a number of bespoke one-day seminar and training events for a range of employers, and is currently involved in developing a Foundation Degree in Computing to meet local sector needs.

This pioneering introduction of Web 2.0 technology, on both the Higher Nationals in Computing and IT programmes, and the level 3 GCE in Applied ICT, is in the form of a multimedia progression sequence that includes a multitude of assessment methods that aid group and individual learner interaction.

Interactive quizzes as a form of summative assessment and html progression modules (incorporating pictures, acronyms, animation and text) which require students to answer correctly the questions at the end of one page to move onto another, have proven extremely popular with all Tony’s students.

The resources are shared across course teams through the college’s Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard), and Tony regularly runs staff development sessions so that other lecturers can integrate this kind of e-learning into their teaching practices.

More photographs from the event and a detailed case study of the award winner will be available shortly.

The HE in FE Teaching Award Scheme

The STEM Subject Centre HE in FE Teaching Award provides an opportunity for lecturers in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics delivering Higher Nationals, Foundation Degrees and other undergraduate programmes in further education colleges to receive national recognition for their outstanding learning and teaching practices, or work in some other way that enhances the student learning experience.

This award, which comes with a cheque for £500, is open to both full and part-time staff, and is intended to showcase commitment, imagination and innovative ways to inspire students and make their learning relevant.

Nominations for 2008 were required to briefly address the following points (approximately 100 words each):

  • What innovative teaching method(s) the nominee has introduced.
  • Why the innovation was introduced & what the nominee was hoping to achieve.
  • What positive feedback has been received (from students/ colleagues/others).

The award is open to all UK Engineering, Science, Technology and Mathematics lecturers who teach higher education in a further education establishment and you can read about previous winners at: http://www.engsc.ac.uk/heinfe/teachingawards/HEinFETeachingAwardPastWinners.asp
