Working with International Students

A workshop for engineering staff under the Academy's TIS project

Date:
28 Jun 2010
Location:
University of Nottingham
Organised by:
Engineering Subject Centre

This one-day workshop was offered by the Engineering Subject Centre in its role as one of the Subject Centre partners on the Teaching International Students (TIS) Project1. The Teaching International Students Project is a joint initiative of the Higher Education Academy and the United Kingdom Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) with funding from the Prime Minister's Initiative 2 (PMI2). It is a two year project, hosted and co-funded by the Higher Education Academy.

The workshop was aimed at academic engineering staff who work with international students on a day-to-day basis - whether in the classroom, the laboratory or in support of the students’ studies.

The event was offered as a practical, activity-based workshop where delegates had the opportunity to experience several scenarios we might find in our working with international students. The scenarios were illustrated from case examples, with the opportunity to learn from the practices of those who are experienced in their working with international students, and to learn about resources and support available through appropriate staff development. The workshop included a resume of the Engineering Subject Centre’s work on the TIS Project, and concluded with a discussion of how you might wish to engage with the Centre and the Project.

Delegateseach received a copy of the Engineering Subject Centre’s  Teaching Guide on Working with International Students, which has been written by staff at the University of Nottingham and includes examples of practice from around the UK.
