Widening participation

Widening Participation (WP) means taking in students from social groups or communities that have not traditionally entered higher education. WP has been a key Government strategy for a number of years and more recently HEFCE has offered funding, in addition to WP funding, to increase recruitment to strategically vulnerable subjects such as engineering, science and mathematics.

The targets for widening participation in England, Scotland and Wales all differ.

  • In England, the Government would like to see 50% of 18-30 year olds in higher education by 2010.
  • The widening access target for Wales states that: "The proportion of young people accessing HE from low participation neighbourhoods should increase from around 25-30% to 40-50% by 2010".
  • Scotland is continuing to widen access and develop life long learning initiatives through a series of regional fora and Scottish Funding Council funded projects.

Student support – including maths - Students retention and progression

With the increasing diversity of the student intake departments are developing appropriate learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support students throughout their courses.

BALANCE was an FDTL project based at Loughborough University. The project aimed to address the low percentage of women studying engineering.  The BALANCE Project generated a series of resource packs/guides which are valuable in supporting any student considered at risk of non-completion, including Student Mentoring, Promoting SET in Schools and Use of Student Groups for student support .  The PROGRESS project produced a series of guides to support the retention and progression of engineering students through good learning and teaching practices.

Attracting Students to Engineering

The Engineering Subject Centre Guide Engineering Outreach: A Guide to Working with Schools is primarily intended for academics in HE engineering departments in the UK who are interested in student recruitment, widening participation and the promotion of engineering to a wider audience.  The guide is supported by the Engineering Professors' Council Admissions working group.

HEFCE Strategically important and vulnerable subjects

In 2004, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills sought advice from HEFCE on whether there are any higher education subjects or courses of national importance where intervention might be appropriate to enable them to be available, and the types of intervention that could be considered.  HEFCE are supporting and developing a number of projects to address issues of student demand for STEM subjects deemed to be both strategically important and vulnerable, concentrating on chemistry, physics, computing, engineering and maths.

National Engineering Programme (NEP)

The Royal Academy of Engineering is managing and overseeing the HEFCE funded National Engineering Programme (NEP). By promoting the development of attractive engineering courses in local universities and filling those courses with students with aptitude, the NEP intends to change the face of UK higher education in engineering, widening participation and strengthening engineering as a strategic subject.

Stimulating Demand for Physics

This project, lead by the Institute of Physics (IOP) will have two strands.  The access strand is concerned with improving the accessibility and marketability of physics-based degrees to students who do not traditionally enter university to study the subject. The demand strand will be based in clusters of schools, designed to increase students' motivation to continue with physics to A-level and, hence, to higher education.

Chemistry for our Future

Chemistry for Our Future, lead by the Royal Society of Chemistry, is a cross-chemical community project. It aims to ensure a strong and sustainable chemical science presence within higher education and provide a sound basis for the continuing success of industries relying on chemistry.
