A report on 'The Progress of Work-Based Learning in HE engineering programmes' highlights the need for engineering departments " to enhance their capability and capacity to deliver innovative work-based learning solutions to support this national agenda". (NEF 2007)

This case study details the development of employer engagement with a new foundation degree at London South Bank University (LSBU)’s Department of Electrical, Computing and Communications Engineering (ECCE). The degree has been developed in collaboration with EDF Energy and aims to address the shortage of technically trained engineers in infrastructure companies which provide electrical power distribution in London and beyond.

Education working better with employers : a video from the Engage Project

This DVD has been produced as part of the Engage Project, "Facilitating dialogue between employers and engineering, physical sciences and materials academics". Engineering your workplace advantage

The Engineering your Workplace Advantage website was developed as a personal development planning resource for Engineering degree students. The project was led by Andrea Duncan, PDP Coordinator, The University of Northampton, and was funded as a mini project by the Engineering Subject Centre. The material builds on skills workshops with undergraduate students at levels four and six and was developed to incorporate greater understanding of employability and skills transferability. This briefing (Assessment Series No.11) is one of the Assessment Series which was published by the LTSN Generic Centre. It examines the factors affecting the assessment of work based learning. Work-based learning is learning at higher education level derived from undertaking paid or unpaid work. This is a journal article from the Employability Special Issue of Italics February 2007 Volume 6 Issue 1. The Academy’s Employee Learning team has produced three publications in the area of work-based learning. This report captures a year’s discussion of a self-identified group of ten higher education institutions for whom workforce development provision is a priority activity. A Feasibility Study for the Development of Research-Focused Work-based masters degrees in engineering leading to professional qualification

This is a feasibility study to gauge the level of employer support for employees working towards CEng status through a work-based MSc Professional Engineering with a research element. It was jointly sponsored by The Engineering Council and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. It looks at the level of support amongst organisations that employ BEng graduates, from a sample of UK based companies across a range of engineering sectors. It recommends that the Engineering Council should encourage universities to work with interested industry partners.

Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) and National Skills Academies (NSA) website

This is a web page providing information about the CoVE programme and National Skills Academies (NSAs). Employer-responsive provision survey : a reflective report

This report shows that higher education institutions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are "successfully responding to the needs of employers and, by becoming more flexible on where and the way they offer their courses, are prepared to meet anticipated challenges in the future". Findings from the HEI 'flip' project : application issues

This is a journal article obtainable via the publisher's website. The Flip project focused on the delivery of flexible work-based learning to engineering postgraduate students who are studying whilst in full-time employment. During the project, research was carried out to identify good practice in e-learning and pilot studies were undertaken to test the findings. In the project pilots the project team attempted step changes in methodology and style to investigate an approach that would enable flexible learning in the workplace.

This is the website for SURF WBL, a collaborative project from Staffordshire University, Burton College, Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology and Stoke-on-Trent College. Towards a strategy for workplace learning

This is a national study commissioned by HEFCE, which aimed to explore workplace learning and employer engagement, examine emerging changes in higher education which might impact on it, and identify structural issues and future opportunities for its development. It was undertaken in 2005. The term 'workplace learning' encompasses work-based and experiential learning as well as 'traditional' instruction-led learning. This web page includes a summary of the study and a choice of links (MS Word and PDF) to the study and annexes.

Train to gain

This is the website of Train to Gain, a new service from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to help businesses receive the training they require to be successful. The service offers skills advice and will try to match business needs with FE and training providers. Train to Gain aims to enable more adults to achieve a Level 2 qualification and improve basic literacy and numeracy skills. The service forms part of HEFCE's employer engagement strategy.

Workforce development : how much engagement do employers have with higher education? A review of the evidence on employer demand.

This report looks at the evidence of employer demand in the light of recommendations in the Leitch Review. It provides an overview of current knowledge and recent policy developments and looks at what employers want. The report concludes that "More flexible provision and processes of accreditation and assessment of work based learning will be needed by HEIs and the relevant higher education funding and quality agencies."
