Information and support for teaching staff - including new staff

Are you new to lecturing and teaching engineering in Higher Education? Are you seeking accredition under the Academy's Professional Standards Framework?
Are you undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCert) with your institution?

The Engineering Subject Centre has a range of activities designed to support academic staff, below we have highlight some of the resources, events and funding opportunities which may be of particular interest to those new to teaching engineering.

Specifically, the Engineering Subject Centre provides subject-based information and support, to complement that available via local staff development units, teaching departments or colleagues.

  • The Centre runs events and workshops throughout the year, all of which are advertised through our calendar.  One example is our New Engineering Lecturers Workshop 27-28 January 2010.
  • The Centre's publications range from a fortnightly informal e-bulletin and tri-annual Newsletter translate, to practice guides and a peer-reviewed journal, Engineering Education.
  • The Engineering Subject Centre has also produced a series of Teaching guides that have been released in print format and companion web versions. Aimed at the busy engineering academic, the booklets provide a starting point in a number of key areas including personal tutoring and laboratory and design teaching.
  • The Centre's Resource Database provides links to pedagogic and policy resources in learning and teaching. A selection of these resources have been highlighted below which those new to the literature may find useful.  Using the search box above, the full database and website can be explored from any page. 
  • The Centre's funding opportunities include Mini-Projects of up to £3,500 for learning and teaching development and research projects which all engineering academics based in UK HEIs are welcome to bid for.

Increasing numbers of international students are being recruited onto technical postgraduate courses. Overcoming the maths problem : Engineering Subject Centre case study

This case study describes a first year engineering mathematics module provided to classes of around 230 students. The teaching methodology has been developed to contribute to an enhanced learning experience. Optimising lectures : card sort exercise

This is an online card sort exercise that can be used with students to help them make the most of lecture attendance. Thirteen questions are posed, covering preparation, notetaking and learning outcomes and the student selects an answer from a choice of five options. Educating engineers for the 21st century

Educating Engineers for the 21st Century was prepared by a Royal Academy of Engineering working group drawn from both academia and industry. PerXis a pilot subject-based cross-repository search tool for resource discovery in engineering, based at the Institute for Computer Based Learning at Heriot-Watt University. It was JISC-funded until May 2007. As a pilot, it was being used as a test-bed to explore the practical issues that would be encountered when considering the possibility of full scale subject resource discovery services. Engineering Subject Centre resources are discoverable via PerX.

This is the web page of the CDIO Instructor Resource Modules. CDIO (Conceive — Design — Implement — Operate) is an framework for engineering education. To assist faculty in skills teaching skills, the CDIO Initiative created a series of Instructor Resource Modules, each linked to a CDIO Syllabus topic. These teaching activities and resources are not intended to be courses, but to be integrated into existing engineering courses.
