Key Skills

Key skills are a defined set of skills that are common to all learning activities which are required both in the world of work and in other aspects of life. These skills underpin a student's effectiveness in how they perform in a wide array of settings or contexts, whether new or familiar.

Key skills are seen as essential to an individual's capacity to self-manage their own learning, whether now or in the future. The most common key skills are communication, literacy, numeracy, team work, problem solving, information technology (IT) and self-management. Good programme design aims to ensure that these skills are an integral part of the student's programme of study, and should be built seamlessly into the courses that the students study.

Teaching that is "skills-led" should encourage students to interactively engage, whether this is via team/group work, project based learning, computer-assisted learning, or by use of 'real-life' examples through enquiry or problem-based learning. Although this type of learning is more demanding, it should also be more rewarding for the student, who might therefore then achieve better accademic results than by more conventional styles of "lectures and exams".

NOTE: Key Skills has alternatively been known as 'personal', transferable', 'generic' and/or 'core' skills.

Our resource database currently contains 141 resources in the key skills section, listed in summary form below. To view the full descriptive record for each resource click the '[View full description/Comments] ' link after the title.

The NATALIE Project : a case study of new approaches to teaching and learning in Engineering

This is a web page about The New Approaches to Teaching and Learning in Engineering (NATALIE) Project. NATALIE was set up to respond to two changes in engineering education: increasing student numbers (with a wider range of skills and motivation); secondary education being driven by success in examinations. The latter places a focus for students on assessment rather than learning. The NATALIE philosophy is to try to re-emphasise the role of critical thinking - the basis of a higher education as well as a necessary skill of a professional engineer.

Maths support for students : Mathematics summer school at Bell College of Technology

This case study is concerned with the Mathematics Summer School at Bell College, which was run for the first time in September 2001, lasting one week immediately prior to the start of term. Many students admitted to courses in the School of Science and Technology are perceived to have major weaknesses in the type of fundamental algebra that underpins much of their analytical work, both in mathematics units per se and in other units. This development represents one strand of additional support given to such students; the fledgling Mathematics Support Unit can give such support as the course progresses....(more)

Maths support for students : MathinSite : Maths insight from a Maths website

During the early 1990s, mathematics software was written using Visual Basic for students at Bournemouth University. With the advent of the Java programming language, this software was translated and extended into MathinSite, a website containing mathematics applets (small programs that can be run through a web browser). The primary aim of these applets is to help deepen mathematical insight through dynamic, interactive visualisations. This case study shows that use of the Internet not only ensures that the content can be delivered within a student’s own educational surroundings, but also...(more)

This case study is based around the Mathematical Advice and Co-ordination Service (MACS) which was established in 1995 within the Faculty of Mathematics to support students within their studies at the University and to help prepare them to go into the world. Funding was made available for an initial period of 3 years and was then continued on a year-to-year basis. The emphasis has changed over the years and most of the work is now linked to students’ current problems but also includes help for those facing employers’ tests at interview. The University accepted that the concept of student...(more)

Maths support for students : test-based support : diagnostic driven support at UMIST

Students arriving in many of the UMIST departments are required to take a brief maths test on arrival. This case study shows how Mathematics students who underachieve on this test are assigned some questions relevant to sections where they did poorly and also referred to sections from texts and Internet notes. The student’s attempt at the assigned questions acts as a basis for a feedback session. Certain students in other departments (receiving mathematics as a service course) are asked to complete a computerised assignment on areas where they underachieved. Again, they are provided with...(more)

Maths for Engineering and Science : simulation of linear and non-linear dynamic systems using spreadsheets

This case study demonstrates how EXCEL has been used to provide simulation facilities in support of teaching control to engineers. This dictates a sampled data approach which fits in naturally with digital implementation of control. The technique also allows students to explore the affects of non-linearities in systems such as control signal saturation. It provides a ‘hands-on’ dimension which students find valuable. The approach is capable of use with other dynamic systems and is not restricted to teaching control.

Maths for Engineering and Science : teaching Mathematics to first year undergraduate chemists in the context of their discipline

In this case study new entrants to chemistry degree programmes are given a 24 hour course in mathematics if they do not have an A level qualification in the subject. This concentrates only on the skills necessary to successfully complete the first year physical chemistry course; these include simple statistics, functions, partial differentiation and integration. The course is taught using chemically relevant examples, in an order related to the chemistry course rather than traditional mathematics courses.

Maths for Engineering and Science : use of Mathcad to assist in the teaching of second year Engineering Mathematics

This case study details how Mathcad is used in all years of an engineering mathematics course. Mathcad aids students of civil engineering to investigate real engineering problems which have no analytical solution but which illustrate important mathematical concepts. In the second year engineering mathematics course Mathcad is used to assist in the teaching of numerical solutions of second order boundary value differential equations. Comparisons are made between classical analytical solutions and the numerical solutions.

Maths Support for Students : the provision of Maths Learning Support at De Montfort University, Leicester

The Maths Learning Centre (MLC) was first established as a library service in 1994 but initially struggled for funding and recognition at a wider University level. Since 2000 it has been incorporated into the centrally funded Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS). This case study shows how providers of learning support for the university were brought together to form a team which provides direct specialist learning support to students and professional development for staff.

Maths Support for Students : the weekly Mathematics Clinic at the University of Derby

A fundamental aim of the specialist programmes, which comprise the Undergraduate Mathematics Scheme at the University of Derby, is to enable wide access and facilitate the development of mathematical skills in students who on entry may not be well qualified in terms of traditional qualifications in A Level mathematics. The provision of appropriate support has therefore been an inherent component of the scheme since its outset and the monitoring and enhancement of that support an ongoing feature. One component of that support, which is considered in this case study is our Drop-in Mathematics Clinic....(more)
