Using images in teaching

This web page provides information for academics who wish to integrate still or moving images into their engineering teaching.

Start with TASI

A recommended starting place is the TASI website. TASI is hosted by the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT) at the University of Bristol and is a JISC-funded service. It provides comprehensive and up-to-date information for UK HE and FE staff about finding, selecting, using and storing images for use in both teaching and research. TASI's services include web resources, a helpdesk, hands-on training and consultancy.

The CALVisual Image Archive is one of the outcomes of the CALVisual project, which was funded for two years by TLTP3. The project's main aim was to make effective use of image archives as teaching, learning and assessment instruments and to promote the wide use of these archives. It exploited the existing construction image archives of Loughborough University, De Montfort University, University of Westminster, University of the West England, and Carillion Professional Services.

Focusing Images for Learning and Teaching - an Enriched Resource (FILTER) was a project supported by JISC-DNER and undertaken by the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT). The FILTER database contains an Engineering section with two detailed tutorials (the first covering Earthworks, Plant, Reinforcement, Secant piling and the second Surveying, Levelling, Automatic level and staff, Setting up level and reading staff).

The Institution of Civil Engineering Image Gallery website contains photographs in the categories of Bridges/Tunnel/Viaduct/Walkways, Buildings/Structures/Rigs, Coastal/Flood/Dredging/Docks, Culverts/Banks/Reservoirs and the Environment. The majority of the images are from entries to the British Construction Industry Awards. Contacts are given to seek copyright information.

Ebst online is The Educational Broadcasting Services Trust and replaces Shotlist, whose resources have been re-mastered and are available as DVDs and downloads. Maths and engineering resources are available including 'Maths for Engineers' and 'Engineering and vocational skills'.

William G. Godden Structural Engineering Slide Library was collected between 1950 to 1980 by Prof Godden of the University of California, Berkeley. It was developed as a visual resource for illustrating structural systems in undergraduate courses in structural analysis and design. The Library consists of nine slide sets: Beam Structures; Arch Structures; Cable and Suspension Structures; Truss Structures; Domes and Shells; Columns, Rigid Frames, Grids and Slabs; Structures Under Construction; The Structures of Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners; Earthquake Engineering.

ReSET project

The ReSET project has takenComputer Based-Learning (CBL) resources such as TLTP and other legacy material to use as the basis for producing high quality, copyright-cleared, standards-compliant, reusable learning objects suitable for use by teachers on HNC, HND and Foundation Degree programmes. These learning objects will be able to be used in the learning environments (VLEs) of the partner institutions and will be made available through the JORUM repository for others to use.
