CDIO
The CDIO™ movement, which is changing the face of engineering education, is rapidly gathering momentum.
CDIO™ stands for Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate. A consortium of 23 Universities across the world, led by MIT, are committed to setting their engineering programmes in the CDIO™ context.
Queens University, Belfast and the University of Liverpool are leading the UK and Ireland regional group of members, who meet regularly to share their ideas and experiences of active learning, design and build projects, first year experiences and many other aspects of the CDIO™ standards.
Essentially the collaborators are joining together in a "bottom-up" drive to improve engineering education to complement the efforts of many national bodies such as the Royal Academy of Engineering, the EPC and the Engineering Council which are giving a "top-down" steer.
Any engineering department or school which wants to find out more, or wishes to join in with the activities of the UK&I group is welcome to contact Peter Goodhew.

Creating the CDIO syllabus : a universal template for Engineering education

This paper was presented on the 32nd ASEE/IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference. It details how a team at MIT identified and codified a set of goals for engineering education which can serve as the basis for curricular improvement and outcome based assessment. The result of two years of scholarship, these goals are embodied in The CDIO Syllabus 'A Statement of Goals for Undergraduate Engineering Education'.

To assist faculty in skills teaching skills, the CDIO Initiative created a series of Instructor Resource Modules, each linked to a CDIO Syllabus topic. These teaching activities and resources are not intended to be courses, but to be integrated into existing engineering courses. Course instructors are to pick and choose elements suited to their needs and the needs of their students.

Improving Engineering Education : the ImpEE project
