Assessment for learning, assessment aligned to learning outcomes and assessment of group and team work are all areas of interest in engineering education along with how to give effective and timely feedback.
The introduction of UK-SPEC and accreditation based on output standards has produced several issues, in particular how to identify evidence that learning outcomes are being met and at what level.
The Engineering Subject Centre, Engineering Council (EC) and the Engineering Professors’ Council (EPC) formed an Assessment of Learning Outcomes Working Group to provide support to the engineering community to enhance the process of assessing learning outcomes. Experiences were shared between programme leaders and accreditation teams at the ALOE International Conference 2008.
The Subject Centre works with a number of
Centre's for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs) who have an assessment focus. One of our Associates, Roger Penlington is a fellow with the Assessment for Learning (AfL) CETL at Northumbria University. AfL is to foster student development in taking responsibility for evaluating, judging and improving their own performance by actively using a range of feedback.

LTSN Engineering Case Study : developing the independent learner
[View full description/Comments]
This Case Study produced in 2004 was developed as a result of the LTSN Engineering Mexican Hat Working Group. Independent learning refers to activities that are driven by the learner’s own enquiry. This case study discusses how formative assessment can play an important role in this development process, if it explicitly places a focus on ‘what learners do’ rather than on ‘what teachers do’, and thus breaks the perception that learning only takes place during formal timetabled sessions.

The Mathletics suite of stand-alone or network-based objective tests now comprises some 4600 questions spanning 175 different skill areas from GCSE to level 1 university mathematics. It can be used for both formative and summative assessment. The resource has been used to provide remedial courses for engineering and computer science students lacking fluent GCSE mathematical skills.

Diagnostic testing for Mathematics
[View full description/Comments]
In June 2000, the Engineering Council (UK) recommended to all universities that those students embarking on mathematics-based courses should have a diagnostic test on entry (Engineering Council, 2000). Today, throughout the UK, Engineering, Science and Mathematics departments are carrying out such tests to assess the current mathematical ability of students. 'Diagnostic Testing for Mathematics', commissioned and published by the LTSN MathsTEAM Project draws together a collection of case studies from across the UK providing examples of how academics are using diagnostic tests with students.

Maths for Engineering and Science : teaching students with diverse backgrounds : streaming undergraduate Physicists for Mathematics teaching in Year One
[View full description/Comments]
Many departments of mathematics, physics and engineering now use some form of diagnostic test to assess the basic mathematical skills of new undergraduates. Results reveal that a typical cohort consists of students with a diverse range of mathematical backgrounds and capabilities. Tests also help to identify those students who lack both confidence and competence and are deemed to be at risk of failing or dropping out in Year One. This case study looks at the introducing of streaming for first year undergraduate physicists at the University of Leeds and how staff aim to provide more effective teaching

Maths support for students : test-based support : diagnostic driven support at UMIST
[View full description/Comments]
Students arriving in many of the UMIST departments are required to take a brief maths test on arrival. This case study shows how Mathematics students who underachieve on this test are assigned some questions relevant to sections where they did poorly and also referred to sections from texts and Internet notes. The student’s attempt at the assigned questions acts as a basis for a feedback session. Certain students in other departments (receiving mathematics as a service course) are asked to complete a computerised assignment on areas where they underachieved. Again, they are provided with

Maths support for students : using computer based tests to allow multiple attempts at assessment
[View full description/Comments]
Computer based assessment has been used at UWE for a number of years on certain modules run by the School of Mathematical Sciences. This case study discusses the operation of the assessment for a first year engineering mathematics module in which students are permitted multiple attempts and are allowed, within an specified period of time, to choose when they take the assessment. Feedback from students was positive about the assessment regime and the observation is that operating the tests in this way does encourage students to work steadily throughout the year.
