A Global Dimension for Engineering Education

A Global Dimension for Engineering Education

Engineers face an increasingly complex world, in which the large intractable problems such as poverty, sustainability and economic crises merge with increased globalisation. Engineering graduates will need to be able to work in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams to both assess needs and co-create solutions with local and global communities.

The Global Dimension for Engineering Education project is offering a programme of workshops during 2010 - 2011 to strengthen the commitment and capacity of UK higher education engineering faculties to embed global issues into the curriculum. These workshops will be facilitated by experts from engineering, international development and engineering education together with professionals in development studies, ethics, human rights and values education. Each workshop will be thematically unique but will have a common thread of developing a negotiated understanding of the global dimension of engineering education. Participants will study the key issues in relation to engineering projects on the ground, as well as considering the implications and possibilities for engineering education. They will be interactive and introduce participants to innovative and appropriate pedagogical structures, as well as applying theory to practice.

An opportunity exists for a limited number of participants who attend at least five out of the seven workshops to receive the Global Dimension in Engineering Education Award and to apply for £1,000 to introduce the concepts explored in the workshops into a context in their own institution.
