Current projects
The Engineering Subject Centre is a partner or lead on projects that are funded from additional external funding.
Open Engineering Resources
This project will make available engineering teaching materials currently in use as open educational resources (OER) under open licensing agreements. The Engineering Subject Centre received funding from JISC/HEA to run a pilot programme from May 2009 to April 2010 and is working in partnership with 6 universities and one FE college.
STEM National Programme
The national Higher Education STEM programme is hosted by the University of Birmingham, with £20 million from HEFCE and a further £1 million from HEFCW, and running for three years from August 2009. It aims to deliver a sustained increase in STEM graduates and satisfy the need for higher-level skills in these subjects among employers. The Engineering Subject Centre is working closely with the Royal Academy of Engineering to build on the work of the London Engineering Project .
A Global Dimension for Engineering Education
This project is working with 7 UK based higher education institutions to help them incorporate global issues into the teaching of students. ‘Engineers Against Poverty’ are the lead partner and has received funding from the DFID Development Awareness Fund for a three-year programme of work (starting July 2009). The Engineering Subject Centre is one of the implementing partners with responsibility for the organisation of professional development seminars.
Developing employability skills through the stimulation of STEM-relevant extra-curricular student-led activity
Loughborough University has been awarded £17,000 HE STEM funding to further enhance the quality of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education at Loughborough; developing the employability skills of future science and engineering employees through the stimulation of relevant extra-curricular student-led activity. Working together with employers, professional bodies, academics, the Careers Centre and the Student Union, this exciting project will give groups of Loughborough STEM students the opportunity to bid for pots of up to £1000 to set up, organise and run STEM-relevant activities of interest to them.
