Our Activities

The Engineering Subject Centre offers a range of activities to support the development of good practice and innovation to support the enhancement of the learning and teaching in engineering education, these include:

Professional Development

We organise and facilitate a number of events and workshops to support the development of teaching and learning practices in engineering education.  Events offer an opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of effective practice, share and reflect upon ideas, showcase innovation and network. We hold events in locations all across the UK, so there is always an event near you.

Working with Departments

The Engineering Subject Centre is keen to work with individual departments (or schools/faculties) and their staff in the development of teaching and learning practices - from making a visit to a department, through participation at staff development events/Learning and Teaching Days, to the facilitation of bespoke working in its support to staff in effecting change. The Centre's activities in Working with Departments also includes offering a portfolio of workshop topics where the workshop can be customised to the department's aspirations for the development of its staff in making change.

Recognising and Rewarding Excellence

The Engineering Subject Centre Teaching Awards provide an opportunity for engineering academics to receive national recognition for the high quality of their learning and teaching practices. The Centre aims to identify engineering academics who are using teaching methodologies that have been proven to enhance the student learning experience.

Engaging Students

The Student Awards aim to motivate students to think about how they learn and to highlight good practice on the essay topic. The Engineering Subject Centre offers a £150 prize to the UK undergraduate engineering student who writes the best essay on a given topic, for example: “What makes the best learning experience for an engineering student?”

Development of good practice in engineering education

The Centre offers a wide range of funding opportunities to engineering academics across the UK including funding for Mini-Projects for development and research, and funding to establish Special Interest Groups to enable the development and sharing of good practice in engineering education. The Centre also offers colleagues the opportunity to share findings and disseminate good practice through publication of reports and case studies on our website and through Engineering Education, the journal of the Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre.

Sharing Ideas and Networking

The Subject Centre engages and interacts with UK engineering academics in both higher and further education and the wider engineering community including professional bodies, other networks and funded engineering education projects. Our Associates Scheme also provides a mechanism for the Engineering Subject Centre to expand the stakeholder engagement with activitiesa dn the expertise that we can offer to the engineering education community.
